Excessive mucous collected in the nasal and/or lung passages causes congestion, which can interfere with breathing. The lymphatics can also become congested, resulting in swollen lymph nodes, earaches, sore throats and frequent respiratory infections.

Decongestants and expectorants are used to break up mucus and help to expel it from the body. It is important to understand that expectorant and decongestant remedies will not necessarily dry up the sinuses. Since they promote breakup of congestion and the expulsion of mucus, they may cause a temporary increase in drainage as the lungs and sinuses clear out irritants.
