Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)

The Specific Carbohydrate Diet works well for people who need a black and white list of foods they can and cannot eat. It has allowed (legal) foods and not allowed (illegal foods). The list can be found at: breakingtheviciouscycle.info

The diet allows meat, fats, non-starchy vegetables, ripe fruit, nuts and seeds, some beans and lactose-free dairy. It also allows glucose and honey. The inclusion of dairy foods and honey make this diet easier for some people to follow.

Foods that are eliminated (or reduced) include: processed foods, grains, starch, starchy vegetables, some beans, sugar, lactose, oligosaccharides, gums and thickeners. Starchy vegetables like potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams, parsnip and turnips are not allowed, while rutabaga, beets, celery root, carrots and squashes are allowed. Vegetables should be peeled, seeded and cooked, as fiber can be irritating to damaged GI membranes.

There is a 75%-84% success rate for people following this diet rigidly. Improvement should be seen in a month if the diet is going to work. If it doesn't, switch to another diet. It should be followed for one year past the point of having no symptoms.
